About a month ago, my kid brother asked me to get him the Golden Goose Superstar sneakers. Upon asking him what on earth that was, he said they were “distressed” sneakers. This explanation still didn’t help me understand anything, so he elaborated that “these are sneakers that were made to look dirty, even though they’re brand new.” At the time, I could only think of Ed Hardy sneakers my friends used to put on back in the day.
Simultaneously, I was still trying to discover what hit me more between the fact that someone would explicitly ask for a distressed pair of sneakers and the fact that it was not even his birthday (or close to it). Out of curiosity, I got on my phone and googled it. The shoes looked awfully plain to me, so I couldn’t understand why he would want that except there was a new trend going on amongst his friends and schoolmates. The thinking stopped for a bit when I saw the price of the shoes. I told him there was no way in hell I’d be paying 600 bucks for that. And I meant it. He reluctantly understood and accepted.
Later on, the good big brother in me felt bad and without paying much more thought into it, I ordered the Golden Goose Super Star Leather sneakers from StyleBop. I later found out I could have gotten cheaper versions of the Super star sneakers at Farfetch. Onto the review….
Let me start by saying these sneakers are not in any way pretty. This is not to suggest that the designers did a horrible job on aesthetics. I think the whole point of this sneaker is for it to have a dirty look, even though it’s actually neat. This look is what you get from wearing a white pair of converse sneakers very often for a year, without proper care.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much to report on the sneakers either. The Super Star sneakers are leather. There are tags “GGDB” appended in two areas of the shoes. There’s also a star logo embroidered. The midsole has the most visible touch of “distress” finishing, even though slight elements of “distress” are situated all of the shoes.
When I asked my brother about the sizing and fit, he said they fit very comfortably. His toes even had breathing space to roam within the shoes.
I don’t want you feeling like I am right now. So forgive me for not wanting to be politically correct. I like the concept of coming up with something different, but is it worth it at that price? If you have a lot of quid to burn and you want a dirty-ish look, go for it. Or if you like to put something like a pair of converse sneakers but you feel converse sneakers are too cheap for you, go for it. But if you don’t have a lot of quid to burn and you want a dirty-ish look, get a pair of converse sneakers or any other sneaker for that matter and rock it till they’re dirty. It’s not rocket science to get your shoes dirty! But why would anyone want to have dirty shoes though?
Anyway, I think it’s possible to pull off a good look with these. Pair them up with a patterned tee and ripped jeans and you just might get something. I’m curious to see what my brother does to be honest. I think he will only get few chances of a good look. After that, it all becomes stale.
As usual, see you in the comments.
